Livestock and Integrated Agriculture Promotion Project for HIV infected people at the Garden of Eden (LIAPP)

Project Number: 22-0510-10

Project duration: 2006-2010

Project Holder: The Camillian Social Center

The Camillian Social Center, situated about 200 Km from Bangkok in Rayong province, is very concerned about the social situation in Thailand since the Thai Government has so far concentrated heavily on economic  development without giving proper attention to social development. With the recent currency and economic crisis, it is now cutting down on health expenditure and support.   The social situation is rapidly approaching the critical point.  Traditional Thai value and support systems are fast losing their hold on society and new alternatives are not being developed to take their place.   It is extremely urgent to launch training courses aimed at helping revive the traditional Thai values and enable them to learn how to take appropriate positive action and create harmonious relationships with each other.  It is also critical to provide humanitarian help and support for the sick and poor victims of AIDS.

Its main objectives are 1) to help reduce the pain and suffering of AIDS patients by providing medical treatment and patient care to selected needy people, 2) to help a group of orphaned children with AIDS to receive medical treatment, education and love, 3) to carry out education and training programs within the community, providing HIV/AIDS prevention information and social development skills, and 4) to do counseling work to safeguard the human rights of people with HIV/AIDS. Currently the Camillian Social Center is working in 7 provinces which are Rayong, Chonburi, Sathathip Sriraja, Trat, Prachinburi, Sakeo, Ciaciansao, Panatnikom.

Project Profile:

The project is established to promote livestock raising and integrated agriculture to HIV infected people at Garden of Eden to become self-reliance during the stay in Garden of Eden and regular society.

With full capacity, the Garden of Eden can serve about 50 HIV infected people.  Now there are around 30 HIV patients in the community.  All 30 community members are the target group of this project.  In collaboration with the Southeast Region HIV/AIDS Network, there will be another 30 passed-on families who will receive 30 sows, 1 biogas unit, 4 Heifers, 100 breeding and layer chicken, 50 ducks, 1,000 frogs, 10,000 fish, animal housing (pig, chicken), 5,000 pieces of mushroom, 100 kg. of vegetable seeds, training (animal health care, feed formulation, organic fertilization etc.), study tour and project administrationã

The project will provide the following major output i.e. the participating farmers will have become self-reliance without any help from the St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand.  The project participants will;

1). acquire skills and knowledge of livestock raising and integrated agriculture farming as major income-generating sources.
2). increase their income and decrease their home expenses.
3). Be able to pass-on their knowledge and skills to their community members.

Project areas: Rayong province, THAILAND

Local Conditions:

The Garden of Eden is a rehabilitation community of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) that are homeless and still healthy enough to do gardening and manual work.  The goal is to create a self-supporting community of PLWHA.  The operations expenses are covered by donation and partially are supported by the St. Camillus Foundation of ThailandHowever, the St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand can afford only a number of rice.  In 2004, the Garden of Eden had the total expenses of Baht 1, 678,737.- (referred to the annual report) and it is likely to increase every year.  At present, there are 32 persons living with HIV/AIDS reside here.

Opportunities for Assistance:

The Garden of Eden is to help the HIV/AIDS become self-reliance in the community. Therefore, the major impact of the project is that firstly the participating members will earn a living on their legs from livestock raising and integrated agriculture farming.  Secondly, the project will be a food-generating center for the community and also expand to the HIV/AIDS in The Camillian Social Center-Rayong.  Lastly, the project participants will be able to pass-on their knowledge, skills, experiences including their agricultural products such as offspring gifts to other HIV/AIDS groups, in the collaboration with the Southeast Region HIV/AIDS Network.

Project Goal:

Participating communities have just and sustainable economy and livelihood

Objectives:

  • To set up a group of animal raising in order to increase income and decrease expenses of the project participants.
  • To build up the capacity and skills of the project participants in organic farming for their own consumption and income generation.

 Passing on the Gifts:

The project holder will coordinate with the HIV/AIDS network of Rayong and the Southeast Region HIV/AIDS Network to select the interested project participants.  The designated project recipients will pass-on the same condition of gifts received (amount of pigs, age, size etc.) within 2 years.
The Garden of Eden will be a learning center to train and share knowledge & skills of agriculture, livestock development and other HIV/AIDS-related information to interested HIV/AIDS people.
