Passing on the Gift
One of Heifer’s key concepts is that each recipient must pass a gift of equal value to others in need. Most often this will be the first female offspring of their gift animal. This principle, called passing on the gift, assures that each participant in the program becomes a donor to others, enhancing dignity and building a sense of community in each project. Passing on the gift also helps communities become self-sustaining. Many project holders work out agreements to return several offspring, one to be donated to another family and another for support of the local organization’s ongoing training and follow-up needs.
The result is that each of the recipients becomes a partner in development, helping to enhance the lives of individuals in their communities.
