Empowered Women with Values-Based Literacy Program
Time passed by quickly. It was almost two year since Heifer International (Thailand) worked in collaboration with Karen Development and Service Foundation to support 153 women from 7 self-help groups in 6 villages with 640 swine, sacks of concentrated feed, coffee-tree saplings, saving group and values-based literacy program. Visit of Senior Government Officials from Ministry of Labor
Heifer International (Thailand) had the opportunity to host the registration renewal committee members to visit project sites in Chiang Rai. The visit was made on Monday 17 September 2012 in Nam Kham Foundation (NKF) project area. The MOL team consisted of 10 senior government officers from various units such as National Intelligence Agency, Special Branch Royal Thai Police, Office of the Attorney General, Office of Foreign Worker Administration etc. Read more.
   
Kae Noy Villagers Pass on the Gift
The Lahu villagers of the Kae Noy community organized their second Passing on the Gift® (POG) ceremony. One-hundred buffalo, four bulls and 125 piglets were passed on from 125 original families to 125 new families in the community. Read more.
   
A Father Leads His Family and Community
Jaroon Saerum, 53, and his wife Thongbai, 49, live in the village of Nong Jan, in the Chumpae district of Thailand's Khonkaen province, one of the targeted areas of Heifer's Community Capacity Enhancement for Sustainable Self-Reliance Project. They have two sons and one daughter who live close by, and their daughter has two children. Read more.
   
Building Capacity to Improve Food Security in Nan Province
From May 23–25, Heifer Thailand organized a workshop for Hug Muang Nan Foundation, a new partner organization of Gifts for Life Foundation (GLF), Heifer Thailand’s locally registered foundation. Toilets Improve Health and Bring Happiness to Karen Families
During April 23 - 25, Heifer Thailand staff, interns and volunteer traveled to Omkoi with the mission to help villagers build 12 toilets. To promote better sanitation, as well as better living conditions, Gifts for Life Foundation, Heifer Thailand locally registered foundation collaborated with the Khanathanawit Foundation to provide 12 Karen ethnic families with proper toilets. Songsri Mitsathit - an Agent for Change
Sangin Nuea is a small Karen village in the remote mountain range of Omkoi district, Chiang Mai province. This is where Ms. Songsri Mitsathit's family lives. She has been a Community Facilitator (CF) in the Pwo Karen Women Empowerment for Holistic Community Development Project for nearly two years. "I like to work with Heifer because it allows me to learn many new things that I can apply to use in my family and my community," the 25-year-old woman said. "I am proud of being a change agent for women and men in my community." Read more.
   
Heifer Cares for the Earth
For 38 years, Heifer International (Thailand) implements the sustainable projects in the north, northeast, the south of Thailand and Lao PDR. With the mission to end hunger, poverty and caring for the earth, Heifer Thailand supports low income farmers with the gift of livestock for better nutrition and income. Heifer also promotes eco-friendly agriculture and environmental preservation. Animals Arrive in Chiang Mai

Chickens Improve Nutrition for Future Generations
Mrs. La-ong Kotebutr is a member of the Community Capacity Enhancement for Sustainable Self-Reliance self-help group (SHG) in Nong Khon village, Phu Kradueng district, Loei province. She lives with her husband, three daughters, and son-in-law. With her eldest daughter pregnant, La-ong will soon welcome her first grandchild into the family. Read more.
   
Anasue Raises Healthy Pigs and Becomes Role Model
Mrs. Anasue Jana belongs to a self-help group (SHG) in the Creating Strong and Self-Reliant Communities project. Her family lives in Nasiri village, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. She is married to Mr. Jatee Jana and has one son. Joining the project in 2009, she received five piglets and red bean seeds. Through the project, she has learned new animal husbandry and agriculture techniques, which have resulted in better production and income. Read more.
   
From Low-Income Noodle Vendor to Self-Sufficient Farmer
Mrs. Thongchan Thamtong, a 57-year-old noodle vendor, never dreamt of becoming a farmer. Not only did her family have no farmland, they also lacked the funds required to farm. Becoming a farmer and raising livestock were far beyond her expectations. Read more.

Savings Builds Trust, Friendship and Financial Sustainability
On the 10th of every month, saving group members of Saithong village go to the bookkeeper's house to deposit money into their savings. The self-help group (SHG) of Saithong village is one of the seven participating in the Strengthening Community Based Organizations for Self-Reliance on Food project. Huay Mafueng Village Holds First POG
On December 15, 120 families passed on 160 piglets, 164 sacks of pig feed and 83 sacks of corn feed to 132 families in three new communities: Doi Lam, Doi Jana and Tad Mok villages. Within five years, this project plans to assist 720 families in seven communities in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai. Read more.

Kanyapan Chamchuen, a Heifer Thailand intern from Naresuan University, goes along on a visit to a project village, where she learns that even rotten fish, as stinky as they may be and as worthless as they may seem, can be a gift that can teach those in poverty to be even more self-sustaining by using much of their household waste as compost. During the worst flooding that Thailand has seen, the chief of Namphu village and the self-help group’s chairperson met with villagers to discuss what they could help the flood victims in central Thailand. Persistence Keeps Poverty Away in Chiang Mai
Recently we had a chance to visit the former Heifer Thailand project at Pha Tai Mai village in the Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai Province, where we met Mr. Jaha Ja-ue. Mr. Jaha is a 54-year-old former self-help group member under Heifer Thailand's development project. Heifer Thailand Responds to Swine Virus Epidemic
Since 2010, the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) in swine has been spreading in Thailand, causing high numbers of swine deaths for small- and large-scale pig farmers. PRRS made pork prices in the market increase from $4 to $5.30 per kilogram within one year, the highest in Thai history. Read more.
